Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, a Year After the Sweep
Nine wins at The Game Awards, eight million copies, and a year of small patches. What Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 asks of your hands and your wallet, and where the Switch 2 talk actually stands.

Once a year, a number is painted on a colossal monolith across the sea. Everyone of that age turns to smoke the same day. The number drops by one every year. Tomorrow it will be 33, which is why the people leaving to kill the Paintress before they turn 33 are called Expedition 33. That paragraph is the entire premise of Clair Obscur: Expedition 33; the rest is something you walk out and find.
Tomorrow She Paints 33
This is the first game from Sandfall Interactive in Montpellier, France. Guillaume Broche founded the studio in 2020 after leaving Ubisoft, and in interviews he has put the in-house team during development at thirty to forty people, with QA and localization handled by outside partners. Kepler Interactive publishes; in Japan, Sega co-published a boxed edition. It launched April 24, 2025 on PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, and was on Xbox Game Pass from the first day.
The setting is an invented world inspired by Belle Époque France, the late nineteenth century of world’s fairs and Art Nouveau. In the game that means wrought-iron railings, street lamps, long coats and parasols. The prologue includes a scene where a city sees off the people who will vanish that year, and if nothing moves in you there, the game is not for you. The Steam page carries a content warning for violence, blood and depictions of suicide. It is not something to start casually on a weeknight.
Charlie Cox voices Gustave, Jennifer English plays Maelle, Ben Starr is Verso and Andy Serkis is Renoir. The score is by Lorien Testard, with Alice Duport-Percier as vocalist and co-composer; the soundtrack runs 154 tracks and sells separately for $19.99.
Turn-Based, but Your Hands Stay Busy
Combat is turn-based. On your turn you choose an attack or skill; on the enemy’s turn you wait. Except that you do not wait. Pressing the button in time with an incoming attack lets you dodge or parry, and a successful parry triggers a counter. Dodge timing is forgiving, parry timing is strict. You can finish the game without ever parrying, but a player who parries cuts boss fights roughly in half. That gap is what divides people who love this system from people who resent it.
Each character fights by different rules. One builds charge by attacking repeatedly and spends it on a single heavy blow; another switches between stances. Equipped trinkets unlock their effects as permanent skills after a few battles, and those skills can then be stacked with other trinkets. Finding those combinations is the pleasure of the middle game. There are three difficulty settings, and lowering one is a reasonable response if parrying never clicks.
The first ten hours cover the prologue in the city, the landing on the first island, and the arrival of your first companions. Two things are worth knowing going in. There is no minimap; the areas are mostly corridor-shaped so you rarely get lost, but hidden side paths are easy to walk past. And there is a free-aim mode you can enter outside of enemy turns to shoot weak points, which pays off before a fight even starts. The tutorial moves quickly past both.
A Single Payment, and Nothing After
The Steam price is $49.99. The Deluxe Edition Upgrade is $10.99 and contains outfits and hairstyles that have no effect on progression. That is the whole list, and it is still the whole list as of August 22, 2026: no gacha, no season pass, and no DLC that sells new regions. What has appeared since launch is a free bonus soundtrack on July 24, 2025 and a separate soundtrack album on December 11, 2025.
With Game Pass, there is nothing more to pay. It runs on Xbox Series X|S, PC Game Pass and the cloud as a Play Anywhere title. According to a post on Xbox Wire dated December 3, 2025, measured by unique users in the first thirty days, it was the biggest new third-party launch on Game Pass in 2025. Finishing the main story fits comfortably inside one month of the subscription; hunting the optional bosses and collectibles takes considerably longer.
What Remains After the Trophies
On the first anniversary, April 24, 2026, Kepler and Sandfall announced that sales had passed eight million copies. At The Game Awards on December 11, 2025 it was nominated in thirteen categories and won nine: Game of the Year, Best Game Direction, Best Narrative, Best Art Direction, Best Score and Music, Best Independent Game, Best Debut Indie Game, Best RPG, and Best Performance for Jennifer English as Maelle. No game had won that many in the show’s history. At the BAFTA Games Awards on April 17, 2026 it took Best Game, Debut Game and Performer in a Leading Role from twelve nominations.
The year after the sweep added little to the game itself. Patch 1.5.3 in March 2026 was bug fixes; patch 1.5.5 on April 24 added anniversary haircuts; patch 1.5.6 on June 30 added Arabic text and brought the language count to twenty. No new story, no new region. The studio has said in interviews that its next project will stay at the same scale.
Who it does not suit first. Anyone who heard “turn-based” and expected something relaxed will resent the parry window. Anyone who dislikes exploring without a minimap or quest markers, or who wants to avoid heavy subject matter, should pass. On the other side, if story and music are the reason you play, or you like Persona and Final Fantasy style turn-based combat and have any rhythm-game reflexes, this belongs on your list this year.
Rumors of a Nintendo Switch 2 port have circulated several times in 2026. At a postmortem event in Yokohama in late July, Broche said the team was interested in looking for a way to do it but that it was too early to announce anything, and CTO Tom Guillermin added that many Unreal Engine 5 features do not run on the machine, which makes it a large technical problem for a studio that size. As of August 22 there is no official announcement. So treat the Switch 2 talk as noise, and if you have Game Pass, play the two-hour prologue tonight; if not, wishlist it on Steam and find out whether the parry timing fits your hands before anything else.
