Honkai: Star Rail Before 4.5: A Boarding Guide
Why turn-based combat suits busy people, how far the 2026 story has traveled, what 160 Stellar Jade adds up to, and why there is still no Xbox version. The state of the space-train gacha RPG four days before Version 4.5 lands on August 26.

One hundred fifty million downloads. That was the figure HoYoverse attached to its August 14, 2026 announcement of Version 4.5. The game launched on PC and phones on April 26, 2023, collected Apple’s iPhone Game of the Year and The Game Awards’ Best Mobile Game that same year, and reached the number above in three years and four months. Large numbers aside, a student who has never played probably has two narrower questions. Whether a turn-based game is worth the time in 2026, and whether the days before a big update are a good time to board. Both are answered below, with facts checked as of August 22, 2026.
Combat that waits for you
Honkai: Star Rail is a turn-based RPG. Four characters and a group of enemies act in sequence, and on your turn the clock stops while you choose. Nothing depends on reflexes, which is why the game works with one hand on a moving train. Auto-battle and a double-speed toggle are standard, so daily chores finish without looking at the screen.
The rule that matters is weakness. Every enemy shows two or three weaknesses among seven types: Physical, Fire, Ice, Lightning, Wind, Quantum and Imaginary. Attacking with a matching type wears down a toughness bar, and when it empties the enemy suffers a Weakness Break, loses a turn and takes extra damage. Team building therefore starts with one question, whether the roster covers this boss’s weaknesses. Separately from type, each character follows a Path, which is a role: Destruction for damage, The Hunt for single-target damage, Harmony for buffs, Preservation for defense, Abundance for healing, and so on. Remembrance arrived in 2025 and Elation in 2026, bringing the count to nine.
The feeling this produces is deliberate without being urgent. Boss fights are puzzles about turn order and when to hold an ultimate; routine fights are handed to the autopilot. Players who bounced off action games like Genshin Impact often end up staying here.
Where the train stopped in 2026
The story structure is simple. The protagonist, called the Trailblazer, rides the Astral Express from planet to planet, and each planet hosts one complete arc. The 2023 stops were a space station, the frozen planet Jarilo-VI, the Xianzhou Luofu and the dream city of Penacony.
The current arc began with Version 4.0 on February 13, 2026 and takes place in Planarcadia, a world built around entertainment and being watched, where contestants compete for the seat of an Aeon called the Elation. HoYoverse described it as a year-long story. Version 4.2 on April 22 was the third-anniversary release and handed out 20 pulls for logging in plus 1,600 Stellar Jade on the anniversary day, April 26. Version 4.4 on July 15 brought the showdown with the Lord Ravager Asat Pramad, who shattered fifteen years of peace, and returned the missing crew member Himeko in a new 5-star form, Himeko Nova. The second phase of the Fate/stay night [Unlimited Blade Works] collaboration opened on July 24 in the same version, adding Rin Tohsaka and Gilgamesh, with a free choice of Gilgamesh or Archer for anyone who logs in before Version 4.6 ends.
Four days from now, Version 4.5, “To Roll the Stars in Astropolis,” arrives on August 26. A new threat called the Voracity pushes the Trailblazer toward Astropolis, the headquarters of the Interastral Peace Corporation’s entertainment arm, to seek help for Planarcadia. It is a resort setting, and the banners follow: Robin Summeretto (Wind, Remembrance) from launch, Aventurine Waveflair (Quantum, Elation) from September 12. Two other items stand out. Story dialogue can be sped up from 4.5 onward, and a collaboration with the studio’s own Zenless Zone Zero is promised for later this year. Outside the game, Kafka and Blade outfits landed in Fortnite on February 26. Most of the reasons this game was in the news in 2026 are on that list.
The arithmetic of 160 Stellar Jade
Payment runs through Warps, the game’s gacha. One Warp costs 160 Stellar Jade. On a limited character banner a 5-star is guaranteed within 90 Warps, there is a 50 percent chance it is the featured character, and a miss guarantees the next one. Worst case is 180 Warps, or 28,800 Stellar Jade. Cash packs of Oneiric Shards run from 0.99 to 99.99 dollars, the largest holding 6,480, so paying for all 180 Warps comes to roughly 440 dollars. The anniversary notice confirms the first-purchase double bonus resets once a year.
The cheaper routes are familiar. The Express Supply Pass costs 4.99 dollars for 30 days: 300 Oneiric Shards immediately, then 90 Stellar Jade per daily login, about 3,000 in total or 18 Warps. The paid battle pass tier, Nameless Glory, costs 9.99 dollars and includes 680 Stellar Jade, four Star Rail Special Passes (Warp tickets) and materials. Most moderate spenders stop around 15 dollars a month. Regional store prices vary with exchange rates.
Daily progress is metered by Trailblaze Power. The cap is 300, it refills one point every six minutes, and a full refill from empty takes 30 hours. Material dungeons cost 10 to 40 per run, and overflow accumulates in a reserve. In practice, twenty minutes covers a day’s work and an all-night session yields nothing extra.
The unfavorable side deserves equal space. Spending pressure here comes less from new characters than from new versions of characters you already own. Himeko Nova, Robin Summeretto and Aventurine Waveflair follow a pattern that settled in during 2026: a known face returns on a new Path, and the earlier version ages by comparison. The high-end challenge modes, Memory of Chaos, Pure Fiction and Apocalyptic Shadow, each demand a different team, so roster width is the score. The spending curve steepens the moment those modes become the goal.
Jarilo-VI is the real tutorial
The game opens on a space station. After roughly an hour of tutorial the train departs, and the first stop, Jarilo-VI, holds a new player for close to ten hours. Moving between the surface city and the underground mines of a frozen planet, this arc doubles as the real tutorial, and it is where Weakness Break and Path combinations become instinct.
The account level is Trailblaze Level, and ten hours reaches about 30. Along the way, free 5-stars pile up: characters granted by the main story, the limited 5-star selector of seven choices that the 4.0 launch distributed, the free Fate collaboration character. These offers change by period, so opening the mailbox and the events tab on day one is worth the minute. This is why the first month runs without a single pull.
One habit pays off early: running the Simulated Universe, a roguelike mode, every week. Each run hands out random upgrades on the way to a final boss, it stands apart from the main story, and most Relics, the equipment characters wear, come from here. Its successor, the Divergent Universe, gets another update in 4.5.
Commuters, couch players, and Xbox owners
Commuters fit best. Turn-based play survives a shaking carriage, auto-battle clears chores without attention, and the stamina cap is built around a twenty-minute day. Couch players are fine too: the PS5 version has existed since October 11, 2023 and shares an account with PC and phones, and the PC build is also on the Epic Games Store.
Xbox owners are still waiting. As of August 22, 2026 there is no Xbox version and no announcement of one, a contrast with Genshin Impact and Zenless Zone Zero from the same company, and the company has never said why. Slow readers should also be warned. The script is long, and the dialogue speed-up only arrives with 4.5; anyone catching up on earlier arcs reads them at full length.
So is four days from now a good time? Version 4.5 is a resort interlude in the main arc, which makes it a low-stakes entry, and the dialogue speed-up lands the same day. The Zenless Zone Zero collaboration is dated only as “later this year,” so nobody knows whether another free character comes with it. The choice is to board now and finish Jarilo-VI, or to wait for that announcement. Anyone with twenty spare minutes a day is better off with the first; what the game offers someone without those twenty minutes is a question this article has not settled.
