Four days before it goes on sale, WARDOGS sat sixth on Steam's most-played list

The entry holding sixth place was not the game but WARDOGS Playtest, with a peak of 245,118 concurrent players listed beside it. Early Access opens on September 10 at $39.99, and the developer has written on the store page that the price will go up later.

Where to play

Queried at 14:00 UTC on September 6, 2026, Valve’s most-played games list had a title in sixth place that nobody can buy yet. The entry is not the game itself but a separate item called WARDOGS Playtest, and the peak concurrent player count recorded against it in the same response is 245,118. The last-week rank field is empty, meaning it was not on the list a week earlier [1]. Every figure below is from that moment.

WARDOGS is an FPS developed by BULKHEAD and published by Team17. The Steam store lists a release date of September 10, 2026, with Early Access among its genre tags [2].

A door that opened by pre-order, then opened all the way

The sequence runs like this. On August 14 the developer announced one million Steam wishlists, six months after revealing the game [3]. The August 20 post says pre-orders had blown past expectations and that the first wave of beta invites had gone out [4].

The second beta started with pre-order holders. The pre-purchase notice on the store page gives the window as September 3 at 19:00 UTC through September 6 at 08:00 UTC [2]. A September 1 post explained why the door was not simply left open: invites went out in waves so the team could watch the parts that only break at scale, naming server scaling, server browsing, Twitch Drops, DLC entitlements, voice chat and the login queue [5].

Then the door came off its hinges. At 21:08 UTC on September 5 a post went up whose headline was a single line saying the closed beta was now an open beta. The body carried an invitation to break the servers and the closing time, and nothing else [6].

One hundred players, three teams, one square of ground

The rules on the store page are compact. Up to 100 players join a match, split into three teams, and fight over a randomised 2×2 km control zone inside a 256 km² map. The team with more players inside the zone scores, and the first to 100 points wins [2].

Money sits on top of that. Every player starts with $10,000 in in-game cash and buys a fresh loadout of weapons, gear and vehicles each life. Reviving a squadmate, ferrying friendlies to the zone or holding the objective all pay, and the cash carries over between matches. Apartment blocks can come down under rocket fire, and chokepoints can be fortified with a player-built forward base. Voice chat is proximity based [2].

There is no way to play alone. The Steam category list carries Multi-player, PvP and Online PvP, with no single-player entry [2].

$39.99 is the Early Access price, and the developer says so plainly

The store offers two purchase options: the game at $39.99 and a Supporter Edition at $49.99 [2].

The developer Q&A on the same page sets out what that price means. BULKHEAD expects WARDOGS to stay in Early Access for roughly one to two years and states it is adamant about not staying there long, with that time going to expanding content, improving systems, refining balance and responding to feedback. The answer on pricing is more direct: the game is priced lower during Early Access, and the studio may raise it closer to full release as content and polish are added [2].

So the case for buying now comes from the developer itself, and what arrives is not a finished game. The Early Access build is described as carrying the 100-player three-team match, large maps with dynamic objective zones, cash and XP progression, gunplay balanced for play rather than simulation, vehicles and logistics, and proximity voice chat. Held back for later are more maps, weapons and vehicles, new vehicle types including fighter jets, additional objective variations, deeper progression and a seasonal meta game [2].

Worth checking before September 10

Windows only. The platform row on the Steam page lists neither macOS nor Linux [2].

The gap between minimum and recommended is wide. Minimum is Windows 10 with an Intel Core i5 8600 or Ryzen 5 3500, 16 GB of RAM and a GTX 1660 or RX 590, which the developer targets at 1080p Low, 60 fps upscaled. Recommended is Windows 11 with a Core i7 12700K or Ryzen 7 5700X and an RTX 3070 or RX 6700 XT, targeting 1440p Medium above 70 fps natively or 4K Medium above 60 fps upscaled. Storage is 50 GB either way, and a broadband connection is required [2].

Fourteen languages are supported, and English is the only one with full audio [2]. The content notice states that the game involves killing with weapons and melee combat [2].

What the beta installed was the playtest entry. What unlocks on the 10th is a different item on the same store page, and the space to clear for it is 50 GB.
