Capcom moved Onimusha: Way of the Sword forward three weeks to September 4
An investor-relations release dated July 2, 2026 shifted the swordplay action game from September 25 to September 4, twenty-one days earlier. Capcom gave no reason for the change, and the date has not moved since.

A change of release date usually means a delay. The investor-relations release Capcom published on July 2, 2026 went the other way. Onimusha: Way of the Sword moved from Friday, September 25, 2026 to Friday, September 4, 2026, twenty-one days earlier [1]. As of September 3, 2026 that date is still standing, which leaves one day.
Musashi in demon armor, twenty years on
Onimusha is a Capcom action series that started in 2001. Way of the Sword is its first new entry in over twenty years, and Capcom’s own product table files the genre as Swordplay Action. The protagonist is Miyamoto Musashi, the historical swordsman. The setting, in the wording of the English release, is an Edo-era Kyoto twisted by malevolent clouds of Malice. Capcom writes that it is building the game around exhilarating sword-based action and a story woven by a cast of highly unique characters, with the aim of reaching a wide range of players [1]. Series sales exceed 9.2 million units as of June 30, 2026, a number Capcom updated in an August 31 release [2].
The notice that subtracted 21 days
The July release prints the change as a before and an after. Before: Friday, September 25, 2026. After: Friday, September 4, 2026. The platform row lists PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2 and PC [1].
No reason for the move appears anywhere in the document. The only context Capcom offers is a line of company policy: alongside its regular slate of major annual releases, it is working to re-activate IPs that have not had a new title in some time [1].
Since July 2, Capcom’s English IR feed carries exactly one further Onimusha item. On August 31 the company reported two wins at the Gamescom Awards 2026, held during gamescom in Germany from August 26 to 30: Best Gameplay and Best Sony PlayStation Game, decided by a jury of game industry professionals and the associated community together with voting from players. The product table in that document still reads September 4, 2026, and no delay has been announced [2].
The store page lists a different day
One detail is worth checking before buying. The date Capcom announced is September 4, but the Steam store page for the game reads September 3, 2026, and on September 3 the Korean, Japanese, US, mainland Chinese and Taiwanese storefronts all showed that same day [3]. Capcom has not published unlock times by platform or region, so there is no basis for treating this as a single worldwide moment.
The Steam build is Windows only and lists at $69.99 in the US and 79,800 won in Korea. Steam top-seller charts are compiled per region: on the same day the game sat second in the Korean store and sixth in the US store, on pre-orders alone [3].
That leaves one decision and one thing to look up. The decision is hardware: Steam, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S or Switch 2. The thing to look up is your own storefront, because the date printed there is not the date in the press release, and Capcom has not said what time each region opens.
