Vaulted Destiny 2 campaigns and raids are coming back, and Bungie has not said when

Bungie's new leadership said on 21 September that vaulted Destiny 2 campaigns, destinations and raids will return for all players, with no dates attached. It also admitted Marathon reached fewer players than hoped and pointed to a reset on 6 October and the Symbiosis update on 8 December.

Bungie says it will put vaulted Destiny 2 campaigns, destinations and raids back into the game and make them available to every Destiny 2 player. It has not said which will come first or when. The commitment sits in a post published on 21 September, US time, under two names: studio head Poria Torkan and Josh Deane, head of product and general manager of Marathon [1]. This article reflects information as of 22 September 2026.

The final update was not final after all

Destiny 2 received its Monument of Triumph update on 9 June. It built a new set of Triumphs that route players back through existing activities, brought Pantheon back and gave Sparrow Racing League its Destiny 2 debut [2]. In the new post, Bungie writes that when it announced that update as the final content update for Destiny 2, players “responded in force.” It then says plainly that it is not done with Destiny and calls the series foundational to the studio’s future [1].

Restoring the vault is the first step. Bungie concedes that removing that content had a lasting impact on player trust and enjoyment. It also says the work is not a matter of restoring old files: changes made since Beyond Light mean lighting, encounters, combatants and other underlying systems all need updating before the returning content meets today’s stability and gameplay standards. More detail is promised over the coming months [1].

Marathon did not draw the crowd Bungie wanted

Marathon launched on Steam on 5 March 2026 and currently sells for 44,800 KRW on the Korean store [3]. Bungie’s post says the game launched to strong critical reception but did not reach as many players as the studio had hoped. The plan is to push it past the genre constraints Bungie set for it, towards a deeper survival game with something for players who prefer cooperative PvE, competitive PvP or the mix of both in PvPvE [1].

The dated part of the plan came a week earlier in a development update. A major update once set for 22 September has slipped. On 6 October Marathon instead resets progression and the in-game economy, adds a new Rewards Pass and quality-of-life fixes, and brings Vault Breaker back for a limited time. The delayed work moves to the Symbiosis update on 8 December, which carries Marathon’s first permanent PvE experience, a refreshed Perimeter zone, a social space with a firing range, a new Runner shell, an experimental Team Deathmatch mode and early improvements for new players. Bungie also says it is dropping the practice of tying major updates to fixed seasonal deadlines [4].

Four commitments, in Bungie’s own framing

The post lists four goals Bungie says it will be measured against: build a stronger long-term future for Destiny while restoring its past, grow Marathon into something sustainable, be more transparent about development priorities, and communicate more consistently, especially when plans change. How it will report against them is due alongside the next major updates for both games [1].

Bungie also describes internal changes. It says it has simplified its priorities, cut competing initiatives, moved decisions closer to the teams making the games and changed how it measures success so that player satisfaction counts for more [1]. The post announces no new game. The Marathon team is due to lay out its longer-term vision later this week, but the order in which Destiny 2’s vaulted campaigns return is still an open question.
