Genshin Impact 7.0: Worth Starting Now?

Snezhnaya opened on August 12, 2026 and closed the loop on six years of story. For students who never played: what the game is, what you actually pay for, what the first ten hours feel like, and why Xbox is in while Switch 2 is still not.

Where to play

A train crosses a white plain while a blizzard closes behind it, and a city of chimneys and onion domes comes into view. That is the opening of Version 7.0, “Everwinter Without Mercy,” which arrived on August 12, 2026, and it is the moment the seventh and final nation of Teyvat, Snezhnaya, opened to players. The first nation, Mondstadt, opened on September 28, 2020. Almost six years separate the two. What follows is written for a student who has never installed the game, with every fact checked as of August 22, 2026.

A train into the seventh nation

Snezhnaya matters beyond being new terrain. The main story of the game is a tour of seven nations, each tied to one element and one god, and the northern nation has been the shadowy antagonist since the first chapter. Its agents, the Fatui, have shown up in every region as the people pulling strings. Version 7.0 finally lets players walk into their headquarters city, ride the trains that connect the frozen settlements, and watch an Archon Quest about a catastrophic blizzard and the energy crisis behind it. Finishing that quest pays out up to 560 Primogems, the premium currency, which is the game’s way of rewarding people for reading the story rather than skipping it.

The update also changes how the game plays. A pair of goggles obtained on arrival protects against the cold, calls trains, and unlocks a third-person shooter mode with three firearms and collectible attachments. A new elemental reaction, Stellar Swirl, triggers when Anemo and Cryo combine, leaving a vortex that grows with repeated triggers and, outside combat, lifts jump height. Two playable characters debut: Odette, a 5-star Cryo sword user, and Alyosha, a 4-star Electro polearm user handed out free for progressing the Archon Quest. A six-year-old live game still rewriting its rules is the reason the update is being talked about well outside the existing player base.

Seven elements and a glider

Genshin Impact is an open-world action RPG. In plain terms: anything visible on the map can be reached on foot, by climbing, or by gliding off a peak. Combat runs on seven elements, Pyro, Hydro, Anemo, Electro, Dendro, Cryo and Geo, one per character. Wetting an enemy and then hitting it with lightning causes Electro-Charged; setting it alight and then freezing it causes Melt. These reactions multiply damage, so building a four-character team is where the strategy lives. Switching between the four mid-fight is instant, and a team that chains reactions well will outperform a team of stronger but mismatched characters.

The world is the other half. Puzzles hide in the landscape, chests reward detours, and each nation has its own music, architecture and side cast. Since 2020 the roster of regions has grown through Liyue, Inazuma, Sumeru, Fontaine and Natlan, then Nod-Krai with Version 6.0 on September 10, 2025, and now Snezhnaya. A new player inherits all of it at once.

What you actually pay for

The download, the full map and the entire main story are free. Spending concentrates in one place, the wish screen, where characters and weapons are drawn at random. One wish costs 160 Primogems. Primogems are earned steadily by playing, and they can also be bought through Genesis Crystals at a one-to-one exchange.

The math is worth doing once. On a limited character banner, a 5-star is guaranteed within 90 wishes. There is a 50 percent chance that 5-star is the featured character; if not, the next 5-star is guaranteed to be. Worst case, 180 wishes, or 28,800 Primogems. The largest top-up pack is 6,480 Genesis Crystals for 99.99 dollars, so covering 180 wishes entirely with cash is a little over four packs, roughly 440 dollars before the one-time first-purchase bonus. Version 5.0 in August 2024 added a safeguard called Capturing Radiance, which forces the featured character after three consecutive losses of the 50-50. It softens long-term bad luck rather than cutting the price of a first pull.

The cheap route also has numbers. The Blessing of the Welkin Moon costs 4.99 dollars for 30 days: 300 Genesis Crystals up front, then 90 Primogems each day you log in, about 3,000 Primogems or 18 wishes in total. The paid battle pass tier, the Gnostic Hymn, costs 9.99 dollars and includes 680 Primogems, four Intertwined Fates (wish tickets), and a stack of upgrade materials. Together they form the 15-dollar-a-month baseline most moderate spenders settle on. Everything above that is optional.

None of this means the pressure is absent. Banners rotate roughly every three weeks, reruns are unpredictable, and the urge to spend saved Primogems arrives on a schedule. The full main story is finishable with the starter cast and characters given out in events. The final stages of the hardest challenge content, however, do punish a thin roster.

Learning the wind in Mondstadt

The game opens with the Traveler losing a twin sibling and landing in Mondstadt, the nation of wind. The first two hours are tutorial and story. Around hour three the map unlocks, and the number of things to do jumps. The way not to drown is to follow the quests labeled Archon Quest, the main story, and treat chests and puzzles as things to grab only when they are in view.

Progression runs on Adventure Rank, an account level. Ten hours lands most players around Rank 20, and that stretch hands out a large amount of Primogems, which is why holding off on wishes for the first few days pays. Once the rank climbs, Original Resin becomes the constraint. The cap is 200, it refills at one point every eight minutes, and the dungeons that drop character materials cost 20 to 40 per run. In practice there is a fixed amount of progression available per day, which makes this a game of twenty-minute daily visits rather than one all-night binge.

Snezhnaya is far away, and that should be said plainly. The seventh nation sits after six nations’ worth of Archon Quests. A player starting today will spend dozens of hours before stepping off that train. For anyone who reads the story, those hours are the inventory, not the obstacle.

Consoles that left, consoles that never came

As of August 22, 2026 the game runs on PC (its own launcher and the Epic Games Store), PS5, Xbox Series X|S, iOS and Android. Xbox arrived on November 20, 2024, with cloud play through Game Pass Ultimate. One account works across every platform, and co-op ignores platform boundaries.

Two platforms are missing. PS4 was delisted from the PlayStation Store in September 2025 and logins ended on April 8, 2026, with HoYoverse citing hardware performance and application size. A Nintendo Switch version was announced in 2020 and never shipped; a Switch 2 version has been the subject of datamined rumors for months, but there was no official announcement as of August 22, 2026. There is no native Mac client either.

What actually bites in daily use is storage and heat. The map has grown to seven nations, so the mobile install runs to tens of gigabytes, and a mid-range phone warms up within half an hour. The common setup is to play the big sessions on PC or a console and keep the phone for daily commissions.

Twenty minutes a day, or not at all

Three kinds of people fit. Those who like anime-style art and long stories, those who find satisfaction in filling a map corner by corner, and those for whom a short daily login is a habit rather than a chore. Three kinds do not. Anyone who dislikes gacha on principle, anyone who wants to skip the story and only fight (the story has to be read to unlock the next region), and anyone looking for a game to finish in a month.

For someone starting today, one target is enough: finish the Archon Quests of Mondstadt and Liyue before September 28, the game’s sixth anniversary. What that day brings had not been announced as of August 22, 2026, which is an argument for starting now rather than waiting. The sensible setup is PC or PS5 for the long sessions and the phone for daily commissions. The platform list above will be corrected the day a Switch 2 version is officially announced.
