Tarot meets Castlevania: Belmont's Curse

Rose Belmont takes a whip and a cursed arm into 1499 Paris. A one-time purchase with tarot-powered abilities makes an appealing proposition, but launch-day PC issues, demanding minimum specs and a 30fps Switch version complicate it.

Castlevania: Belmont's Curse arrives in the year of the series' 40th anniversary, with a new Belmont, a Paris setting and a development team that includes Evil Empire and Motion Twin. On launch day it ranked 7th on Steam's US and Japan top sellers for games and 19th in Korea[5]. KONAMI had posted a known-issues notice about PC startup failures the day before[4]. This review is current as of October 15, 2026.

Paris gives the Belmont legacy a new starting point

The premise is direct enough for someone who has never followed the family tree. It is 1499, monsters have attacked Paris, and Rose Belmont sets out to find the source of the catastrophe. She carries Vampire Killer, the sacred whip associated with her family. Her father is Trevor Belmont, the hero who defeated Dracula, and the story takes place 23 years after Castlevania III: Dracula's Curse[1][2].

Rose also carries Dracula's curse in her right arm. That gives the new protagonist a conflict beyond inheriting a famous weapon: the hunter has a connection to the enemy she is confronting. The official description places street exploration, monster hunting and a concealed conspiracy at the centre of her journey[1][2].

For returning players, the historical connection is explicit. Castlevania began on the Famicom Disk System in 1986 and marked its 40th anniversary in September 2026. KONAMI and Evil Empire are developing this entry with Motion Twin as an advisory studio. Motion Twin created the 2018 action game Dead Cells. That background explains the interest in faster action, although a studio credit cannot establish how precise a new game's controls feel. Katsuya Terada's newly drawn key visual supplies another distinctive contribution, placing a recognisable artist's work around the new Belmont[2][3].

The whip does more than reach an enemy

The central mechanical pitch is the relationship between fighting and moving. KONAMI describes whip movement resembling a trapeze artist's aerial motion, paired with fast combat. Vampire Killer therefore has a role in navigating the environment as well as attacking monsters. For an exploration game, that is a useful organising idea: the signature weapon also shapes the way the player crosses its spaces[1][2].

Bosses feed into a second system. Defeated enemies of that class are sealed inside Rose's tarot cards, and their Arcana grant spells and special actions. Death, Medusa and Carmilla return alongside new bosses including Joan of Arc. A victory contributes to Rose's collection of powers, giving boss hunting a purpose beyond removing the next obstacle[1][2].

Equipment adds further choices through seven weapon categories and Relics that affect offence and defence. Taken together, the official systems suggest a game for players who enjoy expanding a map, defeating bosses and reconsidering their equipment. They do not establish how evenly the weapons are balanced, how demanding a particular fight becomes or how long the exploration lasts[1][2].

Steam lists adjustable difficulty and Steam Cloud, but this remains a single-player game. Difficulty adjustment gives a newcomer some room to find a suitable challenge; it does not turn the game into a shared adventure. Someone looking for an action game to play with a friend should treat that distinction as a purchasing condition. Someone looking for a solitary gothic exploration game is much closer to the intended audience[1][3].

The premium edition bundles art, music and a Relic

The US Steam price is $29.99. In the Korean Steam store, the Standard Edition costs ₩35,000 and the Midnight Edition costs ₩46,000. These are regional prices, rather than currency conversions. The game uses a one-time purchase model, and official materials list no additional in-game payments. That makes the initial edition choice the main payment decision described by the publisher[2][3].

Standard contains the game. Midnight adds a Digital Sound & Art Gallery and three in-game items: the Trevor Style Costume, the Sypha Style Costume and the Family's Grace Relic. The gallery runs as a separate application and includes more than 100 pieces of concept art and sketches, alongside 71 tracks used in the game. For a reader interested in the production artwork or music, those contents give the premium edition a concrete purpose[1][2].

The Relic deserves attention because the upgrade includes an equipment item as well as costumes. The confirmed information does not quantify its effect, so there is no sound basis for describing Midnight as necessary for an easier playthrough or dismissing its contents as entirely cosmetic. In Korea, the ₩11,000 difference buys that specified bundle. Whether the music, art and items justify it depends more on the buyer's interests than on the existence of a more expensive edition.

The Alucard Style Costume is listed as a preorder or early-purchase bonus. Physical copies are limited to the Midnight Edition on PS5 and Switch. A collector who wants a boxed copy is consequently choosing the premium package, whereas a digital buyer can start with the base game. The bonus should be considered separately from the permanent contents of either edition[1][2].

A 2D presentation still needs a suitable machine

The official frame-rate distinction is substantial: Switch is listed at 30fps, while the other versions are listed at 60fps. For a game built around fast attacks and aerial movement, that belongs near the top of the platform comparison. These are published specifications, not measurements demonstrating that every scene holds the listed rate[1].

PC requirements also deserve more attention than the 2D presentation might initially suggest. Steam lists Windows 11, an Intel Core i5 8400, 16GB of RAM, a GeForce GTX 1650 and 10GB of storage as the minimum specification. A Windows 10 computer falls outside that stated operating-system requirement. An older laptop should be judged against this list, rather than against an assumption that a side-on-looking action game must be undemanding[3].

Storage figures differ between the product information and the Steam requirement. KONAMI lists a minimum of 8GB for Standard and 10GB for Midnight, reduced to 4GB and 6GB respectively on Switch. Steam asks for 10GB on PC. The storefront's figure is the practical starting point for a PC installation, while the Switch figures help distinguish the two packages on a smaller device[1][3].

Japanese and English voice tracks accompany subtitles in 11 languages, including English, Korean, Simplified Chinese and Traditional Chinese. Regional age ratings differ too: ESRB Teen in North America, CERO C for ages 15 and above in Japan, and GRAC 19 in Korea. The relevant rating is the one attached to the buyer's region[1][2].

The first obstacle may be a display setting

The October 14 notice identifies a specific startup problem on Steam and Xbox on PC. Disabling V-Sync while leaving the frame rate unlimited can prevent the game from launching. KONAMI's workaround begins outside the game: lower the monitor refresh rate in Windows to below 60Hz, launch the game, enable V-Sync in its settings, then restore the original monitor refresh rate. The distinction between below 60Hz and simply selecting 60Hz matters when following those instructions[4].

Steam Deck has a separate issue in which parts of the interface can extend beyond the visible screen. Another problem affects PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Steam and Xbox on PC when the system language is set to certain languages, including Arabic. After saving and returning to the title screen, players may be unable to proceed. Changing the system language to another supported language, such as English, is the published workaround[4].

KONAMI says a corrective patch is in development. The confirmed materials do not give a release date for it. These issues affect the assessment more directly than uncertainty over any individual weapon: startup and progression faults can interrupt access to the systems that make the game appealing in the first place[4].

The 3.5 rating reflects that balance. The documented design brings a useful combination of whip traversal, boss-derived powers and equipment choices to a familiar gothic series. A one-time purchase is easy to understand, and the new Paris story offers a clear entry point. Against that, the release has acknowledged technical problems, Switch carries a lower frame-rate specification, and the PC requirements exclude some older setups. The strongest recommendation is for solo exploration fans who have a suitable machine and are comfortable assessing those launch conditions[1][3][4].

Steam's free demo, released on September 30, gives a PC buyer a concrete next step: check whether the machine launches the game and how it handles the action before choosing an edition. Official material supplies no playtime figure, so a cost-per-hour calculation would be speculation. The outstanding release-day question is when the corrective patch will make the startup workaround unnecessary[3][4].
