"We will have more to share in the future": Konami's new IP Rhapsody in Scarlet arrives without a release date

Konami announced Rhapsody in Scarlet on September 3, an action game set in 1920s New York and an original property rather than a sequel to an existing series. Konami's own product page lists PS5, Xbox Series X|S and Steam. The release date and price fields are both empty.

Where to play

Konami has announced a new game, and it is not Metal Gear, Silent Hill or Castlevania. Rhapsody in Scarlet is an action game set in 1920s New York, in which a young magus fights alongside a beast companion by stringing attacks into combos. It is not a remake of an old series but an original IP, meaning a story world the company owns outright and is building from scratch.

The announcement came in a post published on PlayStation.Blog on September 3, 2026. The author is Takanori Murayama, credited in the byline as Rhapsody in Scarlet Co-Producer at Konami Digital Entertainment [1]. The trailer premiered the same day during State of Play, Sony’s online broadcast that collects new game reveals into a single stream [3]. As of September 3, 2026, no release date has been given.

Read only the PlayStation post and it looks exclusive

The post is titled “Rhapsody in Scarlet announced for PS5,” and no other platform appears anywhere in it [1]. That is what a PlayStation outlet covers.

Konami’s own product page reads differently. It lists PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and Steam side by side [2]. Filing this away as a PS5 exclusive gets it wrong. Steam is the storefront most PC games are bought and downloaded through.

On that same page, the release date and price fields are both blank [2].

Combos you build rather than weapons you swap

Combat gets one sentence in the announcement: close- and long-range attacks, area-of-effect spells and beast techniques, blended into “highly customizable combos” [1]. Area-of-effect spells hit a zone rather than a single target.

Konami’s character page adds that Ellie fights alongside a beast companion, combining its power with her own magic [2]. The emphasis falls on rebuilding a combo to suit the enemy in front of you, not on cycling through weapons.

Jazz, speakeasies and a magical district

The setting is 1920s New York. The post lists jazz-filled streets, speakeasies, period automobiles and a magical district [1]. A speakeasy was a bar that sold alcohol illegally during American Prohibition.

On how faithfully that period is reproduced, the developers wrote: “To faithfully recreate the vibrant atmosphere of New York during this era, we carried out on-site research and gathered a wide range of historical references” [1].

The opening theme is already set. Konami’s page credits “Cool/Hot” feat. Emi Meyer by SOIL&“PIMP”SESSIONS, composed by Shacho, arranged by SOIL&“PIMP”SESSIONS and written by Emi Meyer [2].

Ellie and Ilya, who fight together and disagree constantly

Ellie Myers is the protagonist, a young magus who came to New York to make it as a jazz singer. The post says that “valuing freedom above all else, Ellie refuses to be bound by rules or authority.” Cherami Leigh voices her in English, Akari Kito in Japanese [1][2].

Ilya Jones is the young leader of the Seekers, an organisation of magi. The post describes her the other way round: “valuing order above all else, she frequently clashes with the free-spirited Ellie.” Hannah Grace voices her in English, Saori Onishi in Japanese [1][2].

The story has Ellie meeting Ilya after an incident, the two of them following a mafia conspiracy, and the trail leading to a fight that unbalances the world [2].

A wishlist button and not much else

The post asks the reader to do exactly one thing: “add the game to your wishlist and stay tuned for upcoming updates” [1]. A wishlist is the store list you park a game on to be notified when it launches or goes on sale, and PlayStation Store opened registration the day of the announcement [1].

What remains missing is the release date and the price. The field to watch is the release date line on Konami’s product page. It is empty today, and nothing has been said about when it fills in.
