Ghost of Yōtei, Open-world action adventure

Eleven months in, the only recurring charge in Ghost of Yōtei is PS Plus

A PS5-exclusive action adventure set in 1600s Ezo, where the mercenary Atsu hunts the six outlaws who killed her family. The Complete Edition costs $69.99 once and carries no in-game store; owners of the original pay $14.99 for the October expansions. Legends co-op is free, PS Plus is not.

Where to play

A grass plain in Ezo with Mount Yōtei on the horizon, a swordswoman in a red overcoat holding her horse's reins and looking toward a snow-covered ridge

A first-time buyer pays $69.99 and stops. One digital product sits on the PlayStation Store, the Complete Edition, and it holds the base game, both expansions and the online co-op mode[1]. Nothing opens a wallet once the game is running. The US listing carries three notices, the age rating, Users Interact and PS Plus required for online play, and no in-game purchase line at all[1].

The arithmetic only differs for anyone who bought the original last October. Reaching the October content costs a further $14.99 for the upgrade add-on[2]. October is also why the name is circulating again today. State of Play, the online showcase Sony uses to gather its announcements, ran a Japan edition on 3 September 2026 that covered both pieces of October content[3]. The same day brought the four playable characters of Most Wanted, the new combat survival mode, and the last of the four is Jin Sakai, who led Ghost of Tsushima[4].

Crossing Ezo after six people

Atsu is a mercenary with a dead family. The setting is 1600s Ezo, the northern territory that is now Hokkaido. Six outlaws killed her family sixteen years earlier, the game calls them the Yōtei Six, and the spine of the story is Atsu crossing Ezo to find them[5]. The period sits 300 years after Ghost of Tsushima and the lead is a different person, so nothing is lost by skipping the earlier game.

Four verbs cover the play: walk, ride, learn, fight. The official page describes travelling on foot or horseback, finding optional activities that raise your abilities, training with masters to widen the arsenal, and mixing melee with ranged combat[5]. The ground on offer runs from wildflower fields around Mount Yōtei to snow-capped ridges.

The genre label depends on which page you read. PlayStation Store files it under Action, one word[1], while open-world action adventure is the term everyone else uses. Sucker Punch Productions developed it and Sony Interactive Entertainment published it[1].

Sales figures are not public. What Sony does publish is its own store ranking. Ghost of Yōtei placed second among PS5 downloads in the US and Canada for October 2025 and second in Europe[6], and eighth in the US and Canada across the whole of 2025[7]. A game released on 2 October reached eighth for the year on three months of availability.

One price of $69.99, or one of $14.99

The new-buyer path is short. The Complete Edition is $69.99, and the Korean store lists the same product at 79,800 won[1][8]. Inside it: the base game, Echoes of Sekigahara, Most Wanted, plus an in-game mask, an armour set, a horse and saddle, dyes and the Traveler’s Maps[1].

The other path is an add-on. Ghost of Yōtei Complete Edition Upgrade costs $14.99, and one purchase opens both Echoes of Sekigahara and Most Wanted[2]. Neither expansion is sold separately anywhere on the official store.

That is the whole of the money conversation. This review therefore has no pity-timer count and no featured-banner percentage to report. Nothing spins, so nothing needs disclosing.

One offer carries a date. Buy digitally by 30 September 2026 and the Sakai Armor unlocks early on 1 October[2][8]. The offer does not reduce the price, it adds one cosmetic set, and after 30 September the price holds and the set drops out.

The mode is free, the connection is not

The one recurring charge attached to this game sits with PS Plus. Legends, the online co-op mode, arrived on 10 March 2026 in patch 1.5 and is free to every owner, with Asia, Australia and New Zealand a day behind on 11 March[9]. Online play requires a PS Plus subscription, as the store notice states[1].

The mode holds four things. Story missions run two players. Incursions run four, pushing through domains toward a boss, with Spider, Oni, Kitsune and Snake as the launch bosses. Survival puts four players against waves across three locations. The raid, added afterwards, cannot be won without four players, and Sucker Punch put it exactly that way[9].

Four classes are on offer, samurai, archer, mercenary and shinobi, each with a separate tech tree, so builds come out of the gear you have unlocked. Every cosmetic unlocks through play[9]. No storefront exists inside the co-op mode. What exists instead is a subscription underneath it, which for a solo player reads as a running cost rather than a one-off.

Two blocks unlock on October 1

Patch v2.0 ships globally on 1 October 2026 and on 2 October in some territories including Asia, Australia and New Zealand[10]. The date on the announcement and the date the content appears are not the same day everywhere, which is worth knowing before pre-loading anything.

Echoes of Sekigahara is the narrative expansion. It runs on two tracks, Atsu’s past at the Battle of Sekigahara and a present-day fight with a poacher gang called the Vipers in the Ashoro Foothills. Nagato, a figure out of Atsu’s past, is the new character, and new enemy types, heavy weapons, mythic tales, abilities and armour sets come with him[4][2].

Most Wanted borrows the roguelike shape. A roguelike is a structure where a failed run strips most of what you gathered and sends you back to the start, and the studio called this one its own spin on the form[4]. You accept a bounty to begin a run, clear waves, take a perk after each wave to assemble a build, and finish against a boss. Perks cover weapon mastery, gear loadouts, summons, parries and survivability. Runs pay out a currency called Mon, which unlocks techniques, upgrades and cosmetics[4].

Four characters are playable. Atsu fights with dual katana, Metsubushi and a Blind Bomb, and her ultimate, Call of the Pack, summons wolves. Oyuki carries a kusarigama, kunai and the tanegashima rifle. Nagato brings a yari, a tanzutsu pistol, the yumi and the hankyu. Jin Sakai arrives with all four stances from Ghost of Tsushima, starts with a Sticky Bomb and a hankyu, and runs Dance of Wrath as his ultimate and Ghost Stance as his kill streak[4].

A free patch reaches every owner the same day: a Beauty of Yōtei mode for looking at the landscape, new Watanabe Mode tracks, the option to keep one armour set’s appearance while using another set’s stats, a high contrast accessibility option, photo mode stamps and New Game Plus cosmetics[2]. None of that requires the expansions.

Four things to check before the charge

The hardware comes first. Without a PS5 there is no route in, and as of 3 September 2026 no PC plan has been announced, so waiting is not a plan with anything behind it[5].

Voice acting is the second. Eleven languages carry audio, among them English and Japanese, while Korean, Chinese and Thai appear on the subtitle list only[8]. Anyone who needs a dub in those languages will be reading instead.

The rating is the third. The ESRB puts it at Mature 17+ and the descriptors include Blood and Gore, Drug Reference, Intense Violence, Language, Partial Nudity and Use of Alcohol[1].

The calendar is the fourth. Past 30 September the Sakai Armor early unlock is gone, and anyone waiting for the expansions waits until 1 October.

Who this suits is clear enough. A PS5 owner who wants a long single-player game and never wants to see a shop screen again, and who is not bored by samurai period drama or by walking across a lot of ground. Who it does not suit is equally clear. Anyone looking for something to play with friends every night will find one co-op mode and a monthly PS Plus charge underneath it, and anyone without a PS5 stops at the first line.

So the next move splits two ways. Without the original, buying the Complete Edition before 30 September attaches the Sakai Armor. With the original, the $14.99 upgrade wants to be bought inside the same window. What remains unanswered is length. No official material says how many minutes a Most Wanted run takes or how many hours Echoes of Sekigahara holds, and whether $14.99 buys enough of either becomes checkable only on 1 October.
