"Multiplayer Battle Survival Arena" on the official site, "Battle Royale" on Steam: two labels for Eternal Return
Squads land on Lumia Island, scavenge materials, craft weapons and fight until one team is left. Nimble Neuron opened early access in October 2020 and released the game fully on July 19, 2023. On September 3, 2026 it sat at number one on Steam's Korea top sellers chart, in week 165 there.

Two official labels, one island
Nimble Neuron’s own site describes Eternal Return as “a new and exciting Multiplayer Battle Survival Arena”[3]. The Steam page, written by the same company, opens with a shorter sentence: “Eternal Return is a free-to-play, 2.5D perspective Battle Royale game”[2]. Neither line is wrong, and the distance between them is roughly the amount a new player has to absorb.
The terms are worth unpacking before anything else. A battle royale drops several squads into one map and runs until a single team is left. MOBA controls mean clicking to move and pressing keys to cast, the way League of Legends works. Quarter view is the angled overhead camera. On top of all three sits crafting: materials are collected during the match and turned into weapons, armour and healing items[3].
The setting explains the vocabulary. The official introduction reads, “On the remote island named Lumia, the scientific group AGLAIA conducts secret experiments on humans in search to perfect a new race of extraordinary humans”[3]. Characters are therefore called test subjects, and the site has a Test Subjects menu of its own. Matches run in Squad Mode, and the Korean introduction puts the scale at eighteen players in a match[4].
Development and publishing are separate lines on the store page. The developer field lists Nimble Neuron alone; the publisher field lists Nimble Neuron, SapStaR Games and KRAFTON, Inc.[1]. KRAFTON appears as a publisher here, not as a developer.
A 2020 release at the top of Steam’s Korea chart
On September 3, 2026, the first row of Steam’s Korea top sellers chart is Eternal Return[5]. The same row carries the free-to-play label and a count of 165 weeks on the chart. The page describes itself as a real-time chart ranked by revenue, so the number one position is a reading taken at one moment. Open the same page next week and a different name may be at the top.
The 165 weeks are the more durable figure. Three years of continuous presence in the revenue top 100 covers the full release itself, which happened partway through. The store page prints both dates side by side: early access on October 14, 2020, and release on July 19, 2023[1]. Two years and nine months of early access came first, which is why calling it a 2023 debut removes most of its history.
Today’s position has an obvious cause in the patch calendar. After the September 3 maintenance a new legendary skin went on sale for 450 Sailing Tokens[6], a nine-step token package opened the same day[7], and the odds on two loot boxes changed[8]. Season 12, named Sailing, is also running, with a start coupon valid until 09:00 KST on September 10[10]. A revenue chart moves when several products launch on one morning.
Player counts are steadier evidence. Steam holds 69,701 user reviews of the game, 53,452 of them positive[1]. Filtered to Korean, the count is 34,328, close to half the total. These are store ratings left by players rather than critic scores, and the language split says plainly where the audience sits.
Five separate places to pay
The first is on the Steam page itself. Two paid DLCs are sold there, a starter pack at 19,500 won and a soundtrack at 3,300 won, and the 22,800 won figure shown on the page is the two bundled together[1]. The game itself is free, and the store data returns is_free as true[2]. The other four checkouts are inside the client.
Two in-game currencies do different jobs. NP is bought with money. A-Coin is earned by playing, and the official mode guide caps that earning: “Only accounts under level 20 earn experience and A-Coin” in matches against AI[3].
The token package that opened on September 3 shows how the two currencies interleave. It runs nine steps, and the currency changes as the steps climb: 1,000 A-Coin at step one, 900 NP at step two, 2,200 NP at step five, 4,200 NP at step eight, and 2,025 A-Coin at step nine[7]. The sale closes before the September 17 maintenance. What no public page states is the exchange rate. No official web page gives the price of NP in any real currency, so 900 NP cannot be converted before installing.
A single new skin is sold three ways at once. The exchange shop takes 450 Sailing Tokens, the collection package costs 700 NP and can be bought once per account, and the Quest Book costs 50 Sailing Tokens[6]. The collection package holds two emotes, an icon, a background and a border, plus ten Sailing Tokens and two three-day boosts. The same notice adds that products containing boosts applied on purchase cannot be refunded, which covers this package.
The battle pass equivalent is called the Quest Book. It runs from level 1 to level 20, caps daily progress at 200 points, and stays on sale until the maintenance of February 18, 2027[6]. The line that matters comes after: points can be purchased with NP to raise the level. Daily play and direct payment lead to the same rewards, which is the distinction between a pass that sells time and one that sells position.
Odds published to six decimal places
The odds live on the open web rather than inside the client. The probability menu on the official site is split into twelve pages[9]: box and disassemble odds in current, scheduled and previous versions, the personal store in the same three states, and two random voucher pages. Each page embeds a published spreadsheet.
The box sheet carries its effective date at the top, marked as applying after the September 3, 2026 maintenance, and covers 23 boxes[9]. A skin data box has a 2.000000 percent chance of yielding one extra item, and each rare-grade skin inside it sits at 0.285714 percent. The secret data box lists a hero skin blueprint selector at 1.000000 percent, 5,000 A-Coin at 15.000000 percent, and each rare-grade skin at 0.119048 percent. In the Sailing token box, 100 tokens appear at 0.500000 percent while a single token appears at 23.000000 percent.
Announcing changes in advance is a separate practice from publishing numbers, and both are in place. A notice posted before the maintenance named the skin data box and the research data box as the two being altered[8]. A correction notice about the scheduled 12.4 odds for the skin data box sits in the same list.
The path an account takes, from tutorial to ranked
The tutorial comes first and pays for itself. The official guide recommends learning the basics there and lists the reward: Yuki, Hyejin and Eva are unlocked[3]. Three test subjects in the first hour means three sets of controls to try before choosing one.
Matches against AI come next, at easy, normal or hard difficulty, under the level 20 earning cap noted above[3]. Normal matches then grant experience and A-Coin but no Rank Points, and only ranked matches move Rank Points up or down, with rewards paid out on end-of-season tier[3]. Every one of those modes runs in Squad Mode, so solo queuing still means playing with two other people.
Language support favours anyone starting in Korea or Japan. Fourteen languages carry subtitles, and three of them carry voice: English, Japanese and Korean[1]. Hearing callouts instead of reading them is not a small difference in a game where information arrives mid-fight.
The rating is worth checking before opening the client in a shared space. The Korean board lists it as 15 and over, classification number GC-CC-NP-191115-003, dated November 15, 2019, with violence and sexual content flagged[1]. On the Steam tag list, free-to-play comes first and sexual content comes second[1].
What to check before you download
Hardware first. The store data marks Windows as true and both macOS and Linux as false[2], and there is no phone version at all. One official Nimble Neuron app does exist on Google Play, but ER LAB is a stats companion described as a way to look up Eternal Return information, and it is labelled as an app with no monetisation[11]. Downloading it expecting the game returns something else. One more note for anyone linking to the site: the root domain redirects to an event page, and the address that resolves reliably is the /main path[4].
The split between players who stay and players who leave runs along control preference. Anyone already fluent in League of Legends or Dota inherits the movement and casting outright, and the preparation loop of gathering materials and memorising recipes becomes the reason to keep queuing. Anyone who finds click-to-move slow, or who wants to be shooting within thirty seconds, or who would rather not depend on two teammates, hits friction in the first match. For phone-only players there is no entry point.
An evening is enough to test the fit. Download it on Steam, finish the tutorial to bank Yuki, Hyejin and Eva, then play AI matches until the controls either stick or do not. Payment can wait. One calculation still cannot be finished from outside, though: what 700 NP costs in money appears on no official page, on the site or on Steam. A game that publishes drop rates to six decimals keeps its price list behind the install, and anyone trying to set a budget first runs into that wall last.
