Squadron 42

Steam wishlists open for Star Citizen studio's single-player Squadron 42, due in Q2 2027

Cloud Imperium Games has opened Squadron 42's Steam page and revealed a new trailer and cast. It is due in Q2 2027 for Windows PC. Audio is English-only, with text and subtitles in 10 languages. Minimum specs: Windows 11, 16GB RAM and 150GB storage.

Cloud Imperium Games has opened the Steam store page for its single-player space game Squadron 42. Players can now add it to their Steam wishlists. The store lists a release window of Q2 2027[1][2]. The company has also revealed a new trailer and cast[3]. The game is not yet available to buy, and no price has been announced. This article is current as of October 11, 2026.

A solo story in the Star Citizen universe

Squadron 42 shares a universe with Star Citizen, the online space game from the same developer. Star Citizen lets multiple players share one universe, while Squadron 42 follows a set story that players experience alone. The company has been developing the two games alongside each other. Founder Chris Roberts told Variety in May that much of Star Citizen's technology and game systems is being reused in Squadron 42[2]. Roberts created the 1990s PC game Wing Commander and co-founded Cloud Imperium Games in 2012[2].

According to the Steam description, players enlist as a recruit in the UEE Navy. They live and fight alongside fellow crew members, moving between fighter cockpits, large ships, space stations and frontier outposts. The game includes both ship combat in space and combat on foot[1]. IGN reported that the new trailer features first-person sections, puzzle-solving, ship customization, off-duty activities, hacking minigames and story choices[3].

Variety and IGN report that the cast includes Mark Hamill, Gary Oldman, Gillian Anderson, Ben Mendelsohn and Henry Cavill[2][3].

What the Steam listing confirms

Squadron 42 is listed on Steam for Windows PC only. Cloud Imperium Games is the developer, and Roberts Space Industries is the publisher. An RSI account is required to play and can be linked to a Steam account[1].

English is the only language with voice support. On-screen text and subtitles cover 10 languages, including Korean, Japanese and Simplified Chinese[1]. The store page lists coarse language, strong violence and depictions of blood[1].

The minimum requirements are demanding, too. Players need 64-bit Windows 11, 16GB of RAM, a DirectX 11.1-compatible graphics card with at least 8GB of video memory, and 150GB of storage space. Despite being a single-player game, its minimum requirements also list a broadband internet connection[1]. The recommended requirements section is still blank.

Wishlist now, check your PC before launch

For now, adding the game to a wishlist is the only available option. The release window is given as a quarter rather than a date, so no specific launch date within Q2 2027 has been set[1]. Anyone interested should check before launch that their PC meets the Windows 11 and 8GB video memory requirements, and that they can free up 150GB of storage. Pricing and whether preorders will be available can be checked when further information appears on the store page.
