What Nvidia brought to Gamescom was not a game but a way of drawing one

DLSS 4.5 Ray Reconstruction shipped the same day it was announced, on 25 August 2026. A path tracing update lands in 007 First Light on 15 September, and the same technology goes into Gears of War: E-Day and Control Resonant.

News out of a game expo is usually a game. On the opening day of Gamescom 2026, what Nvidia put forward was the method behind the picture instead. DLSS 4.5 Ray Reconstruction was announced on 25 August 2026 and went out the same day, running on graphics cards people already own.

The gap where light was guessed rather than counted

Lighting in modern games is built with ray tracing, which follows where light arrives from and where it bounces for each point on screen. It is accurate and slow. In practice only a fraction of those points get traced, and the rest are filled in. That filling step is called denoising.

The trouble is how well the filling is done. With too few samples the image blotches, and moving the camera leaves trails behind. That is the look of a shadow arriving a beat late when a flashlight swings across a wall. Ray Reconstruction hands that step to a neural network instead, and 4.5 is a new version of that network. Nvidia says it raises image quality further in games that use path tracing and ray tracing.

Where you can see it

The first case is 007 First Light. An update pairing path tracing with DLSS 4.5 Ray Reconstruction is set for 15 September, alongside Super Resolution and Multi Frame Generation. Gears of War: E-Day adds RTX Mega Geometry to its ray tracing and supports DLSS 4.5 across the board. Control Resonant showed new path traced footage and is now bundled with selected GeForce RTX cards, laptops and desktops.

Alongside those, Aion 2, Ananta, Aniimo, Beautiful Light, Black State, Cinder City, Fragmentary Order and Silver Palace all arrived with DLSS 4.5 and RTX news of their own. Two of the larger Korean titles in development sit on that list, which is worth noting on its own.

None of this asks you to buy a new card

The announcement bundle carries hardware too. RTX Spark arrives this autumn, and AOC’s gaming brand showed the first 5K G-SYNC Pulsar monitor. GeForce NOW adds DLSS 4.5 settings on the cloud side and widens device support, Steam Machine included.

What you can check today, though, is the software half. Ray Reconstruction is already out, and RTX Remix moved to 4.5 as well. On the side that repaints old games, a large Painkiller RTX mod update shipped and The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind RTX is in development. If your card is an RTX, start by looking for these options in the driver and in each game’s settings.
