PUBG ranked third on Steam's most-played chart for September 28. September's update reined in LMGs and added kicks, the Ranked-unlocking PLUS now also sells for 20,000 BP earned in play, and Contraband crates cost 200 G-Coin a pull.

On Steam's most-played chart for September 28 (UTC), PUBG: BATTLEGROUNDS ranked third, with a peak of 693,850 concurrent players that day. It was third the week before as well, behind only Counter-Strike 2 and Dota 2[1]. The Steam store lists its full release as December 21, 2017, so this is a game in its ninth year[2].

Its reputation does not match its ranking. Of 2,783,717 lifetime Steam reviews, 1,667,853 are positive, just under 60%, and the store labels that Mixed. English-language reviews alone come to 64% positive (297,847 of 464,274)[3]. Everything below was checked on the official PUBG site and the Steam store as of September 30, 2026.

What you decide while the Blue Zone closes in

PUBG is a battle royale shooter published by KRAFTON[2]. You parachute onto a map, scavenge weapons and supplies, and get pushed together with other players by the ever-shrinking Blue Zone. The last player or squad standing wins[2].

The decisions start before you touch the ground. The Steam store page frames the first one this way: land on the quiet outskirts where supplies are thin, or drop into a dangerous city center full of loot and fight straight away[2]. Beyond battle royale there are Team Deathmatch, Arcade modes and custom matches with your own rules[2].

Maps rotate weekly. During Update 43.1, the PC map pool changes every Wednesday at 11:00 KST. In the Asia (AS) region, Erangel and Taego are always in the normal match pool, and Miramar, Sanhok, Vikendi, Paramo, Rondo, Deston and Karakin take turns filling the rest[4]. North America and Europe use a different setup: Erangel is fixed, with one large and one small map rotating each week. Ranked uses Erangel, Miramar, Taego and Rondo at 25% each for the whole season[4].

Why the September update started with light machine guns

Update 43.1 went live on PC on September 10 and on consoles on September 17[5]. This season's battlegrounds carry a Jujutsu Kaisen collaboration theme that stays until the next update[5].

The biggest balance change targets light machine guns. The team began a Meta Rotation, which spotlights a different weapon class each season, and picked LMGs first. After reviewing a month of gameplay data and feedback, it said their impact was larger than intended[5]. ADS time went from 0.30 to 0.37 seconds. Damage against vehicles dropped from 1.1x to 1.0x for the M249 and RPD, and from 1.25x to 1.1x for the MG3. World spawn rates for the RPD and M249 fell by 30%[5].

There are new moves too. Unarmed, you can now do a standing kick or a jump kick, which hit harder and knock back further than punches. Kicks can break windows, wooden doors and fences, and a kick to a vending machine pops an item out faster, at the cost of putting that machine out of action for a while[5]. On the water surface you can now use sidearms and throwables, swimming and diving are 25% faster, and every boat now takes 50% damage from firearms[5].

PLUS for BP, crates for G-Coin

The game is free, and the Steam page notes that in-game purchases are optional and include loot boxes[2]. If you plan to spend, two things are worth separating.

The first is BATTLEGROUNDS PLUS. A PLUS account unlocks Ranked matchmaking, a 100% Survival XP boost, custom match creation and clan creation, plus a few exclusive cosmetics[6]. PLUS used to be a $12.99 cash purchase. Since June 17 on PC it costs either 500 G-Coin, the paid currency, or 20,000 BP, which you earn by playing, and the 1,300 bonus G-Coin that used to come with it is gone[7]. Separately from PLUS, Ranked requires reaching Survival Mastery level 80 in normal matches[6].

The second is Contraband crates. According to the Update 43.1 probability disclosure, a single pull costs 200 G-Coin and ten pulls cost 1,800 G-Coin[8]. In the Jujutsu Kaisen crate, the legendary skin has a 0.6% drop rate. The same disclosure notes that the crate's acquisition method had been listed differently from the store notice and was corrected on the afternoon of September 10 (KST)[8]. KRAFTON publishes a new disclosure with each update; the 43.1 version contains 41 probability tables[8].

How far to go without paying

If you are new, you can play battle royale and Arcade without spending anything. The Steam minimum spec is 64-bit Windows 10, a Core i5-4430 or FX-6300, 8 GB of RAM, a GeForce GTX 960 2GB or Radeon R7 370 2GB, and 40 GB of storage. The ESRB rating is T[2].

It suits players who enjoy a match that never plays out the same way twice. You choose where to land, when to fight and where to hide, so even on the same map no two rounds match[2]. It is a harder sell if loot boxes bother you, or if a Mixed Steam rating gives you pause[3].

If Ranked is the goal, set yourself an order. Reach Survival Mastery level 80 in normal matches first, then check whether the BP you earned along the way has hit 20,000. Whether to spend G-Coin on PLUS can wait until then.
