Chat after an age check, discounts after a $4.99 subscription: how Roblox works in 2026

Roblox is a free platform of games made by its users, ranked fifth among free games and seventh by revenue on the Korean App Store on October 6. Chat now requires an age check, and Roblox Plus at $4.99 a month replaced Premium for new subscribers.

Before you pick

Bottom line
Few places beat it for picking something to play with friends on any given day, but if a child is using it, link a parent account and set a spending limit first.
Know before you start
Without a completed age check, nobody can chat regardless of age, and children under 9 need parental consent to use chat

Roblox is not one game but a platform where people choose from games made by other users. The app is free, and on October 6 it ranked fifth among free games and seventh by revenue on the Korean App Store[1]. Google Play lists more than one billion downloads[2]. In an April announcement, Roblox said 144 million people visit the platform every day[3]. This review reflects the platform as of October 6, 2026, based on both app store listings and Roblox's own announcements.

One install, a different game every day

The games inside Roblox are made not by Roblox itself but by professional studios, indie teams and individual creators. They build games in Roblox Studio, a creation tool for Windows and Mac, and players pick what they want from the catalog[4]. Racing, tactical shooters, survival, role-playing, tycoon and horror games all sit inside one app. The Korean App Store listing names Dress to Impress, RIVALS, Steal a Brainrot, Brookhaven RP and Adopt Me! as the most popular games right now[4].

Your avatar travels with you between games. You choose clothing, accessories and hairstyles, and you can buy 3D items made by other users in the Marketplace[4]. Friends meet regardless of device: the app description says cross-platform play covers phones, tablets, PCs, consoles and VR headsets[4].

Chat now sits behind an age check

The biggest change in recent months is chat. On January 7, Roblox began expanding worldwide its requirement that anyone who wants to chat complete a facial age check, and said the prompts would reach every region with chat within the week[5]. Once checked, users talk with people of similar ages. By default each age group can chat with its own group and the groups directly above and below, which Roblox says is designed to keep children under 16 from talking with adults[5]. Children under 9 need parental consent to use chat features[5].

Roblox says images and video used for age estimation are deleted right after processing. Users who think the result is wrong can verify their age another way, with ID or through parental controls[5].

On June 16, accounts split three ways by age: Roblox Kids for ages 5 to 8, Roblox Select for 9 to 15, and standard Roblox accounts for 16 and older[6]. Kids accounts have chat off by default, and parents can change that. Select accounts open chat gradually with age. Users who have not completed an age check are placed into Kids or Select based on the age they entered, and cannot chat at all, whatever their age. Age bands and default settings can vary by region[6]. Kids and Select accounts only see games that passed an additional review, and games with social hangout or free-form drawing features are not allowed in that catalog[6].

The Korean App Store rates the app 12+, and Google Play rates it 12+ with parental guidance recommended[4][2].

One currency, two overlapping subscriptions

Spending starts with Robux, the platform's currency. Google Play lists in-app items from KRW 750 to KRW 299,000 each[2]. Each game's creator decides what that game sells, and the app description notes that in-game purchases may include loot boxes[4]. The Korean App Store marks the app as containing random boxes, and Google Play flags in-game purchases that include randomized items[4][2].

Two subscriptions overlap, which makes things confusing. On April 30, Roblox launched a new subscription, Roblox Plus, worldwide at $4.99 a month[3]. It takes 10% off in-game items and avatar items, rising to 20% from the third consecutive month. Subscribers get free, unlimited private servers in supported games and can send Robux to other people without fees[3]. Younger users, however, need parental approval every time they send or receive Robux, and only age-checked users 18 or older can transfer without that approval[3].

The older subscription, Roblox Premium, stopped taking new sign-ups when Plus arrived, though existing members can keep it[3]. Even so, the top of the Korean App Store purchase list on October 6 still showed Premium items: Roblox Premium 450 at KRW 7,500, and one-month items at KRW 7,700 for Premium 450, KRW 17,000 for Premium 1000 and KRW 33,000 for Premium 2200[4]. The won price of Plus did not appear on that list.

Roblox suits people who want to pick a game to play with friends that day. When one game gets old, you move to another without leaving the app. It is a weaker fit for anyone who wants to follow one story to the end or dig deep into a single game alone. Because every game has a different creator, quality varies widely.

If a child will use it, link a parent account first. You add a parent from the child's account settings, and the parent verifies their age with a government ID or a credit card before linking[7]. Once linked, you can set content maturity, chat and connections, screen time and a monthly spending limit[7]. In most regions, parents can manage every setting until the child turns 12, and some controls, such as game management and direct chat, until 15[7]. Roblox's parental controls page also notes that text or voice chat may be disabled in some countries[7].
