Where to play

152,259 players at once, and Aniimo still makes you craft its legendary instead of rolling for it

A free open-world creature catcher where you merge with what you catch. PC and consoles launched September 16, mobile September 23, and Steam's weekly chart has it eleventh. It sells Lumin Crystals, a Monthly Pass and two Handbooks, and its odds page covers catching and cosmetics.

Before you pick

Bottom line
A free creature catcher that lets playtime cover both catching and legendaries, with visible spending pooled in outfits and passes, and a first week whose stability still lags behind its player count.

Aniimo lets you work out your odds before you throw. The official site has a page that lays out the catch formula term by term[1]. An Aniimo at the earliest Lumin Stage in an early-game area starts at a 56 percent base chance outside battle, and throwing from behind multiplies that by 1.5[1].

That formula belongs to a free creature-catching RPG from Pawprint Studio. The PC and console version went live on September 16 at 10:00 UTC+8, which was the evening of September 15 in the Americas, and iOS and Android followed on September 23[2][3]. Valve's weekly most-played chart dated September 26 ranks it eleventh with a peak of 152,259 concurrent players, up from fourteenth the week before[4].

Mobile picked up just as quickly. As of the afternoon of September 27 Korea time, the App Store free games chart had it at eighth in Korea, sixth in Taiwan, fourteenth in Japan and 41st in the United States[5]. Every figure in this review was checked on September 27, 2026 against official announcements and the storefronts themselves.

You catch the creature, then you borrow its body

The Steam listing calls Aniimo a multiplayer open-world creature-catching RPG[6]. You play a Pathfinder on the continent of Idyll, catching and raising creatures called Aniimo. Rock, Paper, Shotgun put it bluntly in August, describing a game that follows the Pokemon-like formula Palworld established[7].

The twist is Twine. A Pathfinder can merge with an Aniimo and cross the map with its eyes, wings and senses[6]. In a letter published before launch, the developers wrote that they wanted players not just to adventure with these creatures but to become them and see the world the way they do[8].

Creatures also change with where and how they live. The store copy says each species branches by region, weather, nurturing method and abilities, so the same animal can have a beach form and a marsh form[6]. Filling the Aniilog means meeting familiar species again in new places.

Outside of fights, every Pathfinder gets an RV, and home life covers farming and building with your Aniimo[6]. Operation: Egg Heist is a competitive mode about stealing eggs from other players, and the September 23 update added Holo-Battle Interlink, a four-player co-op challenge that fills empty slots with AI teammates[2].

The platform list is long: Windows through Steam and the Epic Games Store, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, iOS and Android[3][9]. Progress carries across devices within one server, but data on different servers stays separate, so pick your server with care[9].

Catching is multiplication, legendaries are crafting

The published formula multiplies five terms: base chance, Aniipod multiplier, level multiplier, either a backstab or HP multiplier, and a status multiplier[1]. Base chance falls as you move deeper into Idyll and as creatures grow from Lumin to Gamma to Nova Stage. A Nova Stage Aniimo in a late-game area starts at 16 percent[1].

Level gaps do the most damage. If the Aniimo sits 11 levels above you the multiplier drops from 1 to 0.8, and at 15 or more it falls to 0.1[1]. In battle, a target at zero HP doubles your chance and a full-health one cuts it to 0.8 times[1]. Sneak up before a fight, whittle down health once one starts.

Some pods skip the math entirely. The Aniipod Ultra, the Sparkling Cube and the seasonal Legendary Aniipod are listed as guaranteed successes[1]. The launch announcement says events hand out Sparkling Cubes, Aniipod Ultras and Tumblers, and that global pre-registrations passed 30 million, which unlocked two Aniipod Ultras, 200 Glimmer and a limited outfit for every player[3].

Early progression has a few gifts too. Reach Grade I Wayfarer and you pick one Aniimo in its rare Prismana form, and four outfits come free through the story, the home system and login streaks[3].

The first legendary is not a roll. Irisalis arrived on September 25, and you earn it by collecting weekly-capped Iris Petals, crafting a Legendary Aniipod and winning a one-time encounter[2]. The season runs until December 10 at 07:59 UTC+8[2].

The betas worked differently. Players paid an entry cost and threw ball after ball, and the developers admitted that stacking luck on top of repetition made the encounter a chore[8]. They say the crafted approach is now the template for every future legendary[8].

980 Crystals is exactly one $14.99 bundle

Aniimo is free, and Steam lists in-app purchases alongside the free tag[6]. The US App Store shows three kinds of product[10].

Product US App Store price
60 Lumin Crystals $0.99
300 Lumin Crystals $4.99
980 Lumin Crystals $14.99
1,980 Lumin Crystals $29.99
3,280 Lumin Crystals $49.99
6,480 Lumin Crystals $99.99
Monthly Pass $4.99
Advanced Comp. Handbook $9.99
Collector's Comp. Handbook $19.99

A second Collector's Comp. Handbook listing sits at $10.00[10]. That is the gap between the two tiers, so it reads like an upgrade from Advanced, but no official page confirms it. The contents of the Monthly Pass and both Handbooks were not listed on any official page reviewed for this piece.

What Crystals buy is clearer. The September 23 update put a new outfit set in the Featured shop for 980 Lumin Crystals and an accessory and furniture pack for 280[2]. One outfit therefore equals the $14.99 bundle exactly. On the PlayStation Store, the same $99.99 tier is labelled 7,128 Crystals rather than 6,480, a 10 percent difference in the listing name[11].

On randomness, the official odds page covers four things: catch rates, the chance of triggering Prismana Flow while nurturing, Alpha held-item drops, and Sparkling Style odds[1]. There is no entry for a paid banner that rolls creatures or characters. The slimmest figure is cosmetic: an Aniimo caught with a Sparkling Cube has a 1 percent chance of the Dazzling style[1].

One question stays open. The launch post mentions Aniipod Ultras and Sparkling Cubes only as event rewards[3]. If either turns up in the Crystal shop, spending would buy a way around the very formula the studio published.

Queues, red screens and Intel chips filled week one

The launch post warned of login queues and slow loading in its opening lines[3]. The first patch after launch fixed repeated disconnects and abnormal damage numbers in combat[12]. The September 18 notes listed a red-screen bug as fixed while still advising affected players to switch to Performance Mode, and the September 23 update fixed red tinting again[2][12].

Black-screen advice recurs across posts: update your driver, swap between DX11 and DX12, and turn off DLSS and frame generation on the login screen[12]. Two days before launch the studio also posted a notice about crashes on 13th and 14th gen Intel desktop CPUs, pointing players to a BIOS update and Intel microcode 0x12B or later[13].

The mobile launch maintenance was rough as well. The follow-up post added 500 Glimmer for the delayed launch on top of the original 500, and said the in-game mailbox was down so compensation would arrive later[12]. Beta progress did not carry over to launch[3].

Hardware needs are moderate. Minimum on PC is an Intel Core i7-4770 or Ryzen 7 2700, 8 GB of RAM and a GTX 970; recommended is an i7-10700, 16 GB and an RTX 3060, with 40 GB of storage in both cases and an SSD recommended[6][9]. Phones need 18 GB free before downloading[14]. GeForce NOW and Xbox Cloud Gaming are there for weaker machines[9][12].

English and Chinese reviewers seem to describe different games

Steam counts 18,787 reviews, 13,873 of them positive, for a Mostly Positive rating[15]. Split by language the picture shifts. English reviews stand at 6,835 positive out of 9,242, Korean at 248 of 422 and Japanese at 74 of 151, both Mixed, while Simplified Chinese reviews are Mostly Negative at 217 of 794[15].

Mobile ratings lean low as well: 3.6 from 1,195 ratings on the US App Store and 3.1 from 314 in Korea[10][16]. The PlayStation Store's global average is the high point at 4.04 from 5,664 ratings[11].

Aniimo suits three kinds of player. The first grew up on Pokemon and wanted to run, swim and fly across the map in person. The second likes to see probabilities as numbers before committing. The third wants one account that moves between a PC and a phone.

It suits others less well. If launch-window crashes and display bugs wear you down, another patch or two is worth waiting for. If you tend to buy cosmetics, remember that one outfit costs the same number of Crystals as the $14.99 bundle. And on a 13th or 14th gen Intel desktop, update the BIOS before installing.

For anyone starting this week, one date matters. From September 28 at 04:00 UTC+8 until October 5 at 03:59, a Prismana Melloblum spawns in Rosetower Woods, and joining requires Student II rank[2]. Push the story far enough over the weekend to reach it, and you can head straight to the woods when the window opens.
