About
UMIGARI blends the mundane tranquility of a fishing simulator with the creeping dread of Japanese folk horror. Set in the foggy waters off Japan's coast, players harpoon fish to earn a living, but as they upgrade their boat and venture deeper, the catch begins to exhibit disturbing, human-like traits.
Story
You play as a Japanese fisherman navigating cursed waters where the line between human and marine life blurs. The lore suggests a supernatural affliction where emotionally vulnerable humans morph into fish, while sea creatures absorb fragments of human identity. From encounters with a mysterious schoolgirl at a shrine to the terrifying 'Nura' water spirit, the narrative is told through environmental clues and unsettling hybrid discoveries.
Gameplay
At its core, UMIGARI is a first-person harpoon fishing game. Players traverse the open ocean, managing fuel and selling catches to island fishmongers to fund upgrades for their gear and vessel. However, the gameplay loop serves as a vehicle for horror; the further you push into the open sea, the more dangerous and grotesque the ecology becomes, requiring nerves of steel to land the most valuable—and terrifying—prizes.
